The curriculum at Stannington First School
 
At Stannington First School, our curriculum is carefully constructed to ensure all our pupils gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes to raise their aspirations and equip them for their future lives and learning. We teach clearly identified, transferable concepts, along with memorable activities and lots of fun along the way. We want our children to love everything about learning, to enthuse about it and want more. 
 

We consider our local context and plan carefully to address current priorities. We plan a curriculum to give our pupils an understanding of our beautiful county, Northumberland and what life is like beyond – in Britain and in other parts of the world.

 

We want our pupils, who come from a variety of backgrounds and have different needs, to have equal opportunities, to learn tolerance, respect and to have ambition. In the modern world we live in, we recognise the importance of our pupils having the confidence to embrace technology and use it wisely. Reading, writing, oracy and mathematics are important core skills needed for future life; our teaching in these areas is designed to inspire, give enjoyment and confidence. 

 

We believe in a curriculum that gives our children a well rounded education. Our love of outdoor learning through Forest School and other outdoor activities enhances all aspects of learning – academic, social, emotional and personal development. 

 

Our curriculum incorporates the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum (2014) and other experiences and opportunities which best meet the learning and developmental needs of the pupils in our school.  The aim of our curriculum is for pupils to have the requisite skills to be successful, independent and motivated learners in readiness for their next stage of education.

 

Our school teaches different subjects discretely but we encourage our pupils to make links across different areas of learning and, where appropriate, skills, knowledge and understanding across a range of subjects are brought together around a theme.  Within this theme, children are able to practise and apply their reading, maths and English skills in other subject areas.

 

Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development

 

We believe it is important that our school curriculum provides every pupil with more than the programmes of study from the National Curriculum. Life has so much to offer and our pupils have so much more to learn and experience. With this in mind, we have planned our school curriculum to incorporate the additional things we want our pupils to experience during their time with us and also to demonstrate to them the different people they can aspire to be. These themes of community, environment and challenge and our school values: honesty, kindness, perseverance, resilience, respect and teamwork underpin our curriculum and are interwoven throughout all areas of school life and link to the wide range of experiences and learning that prepare our pupils to play an active role as citizens in a multi-cultural society. Our curriculum offer is enriched and personalised to meet the needs of all pupils, their families and our school context and location.

Themed weeks, whole school activities and opportunities within and outside school all enrich and develop the children’s learning. After school clubs and events extend these opportunities further. The school is well resourced in terms of learning materials, books and technology.

Pupils have opportunities to share their learning with each other, their parents and carers and other learners through school-based activities, performances, competitions and events such as 'Stay and Share'. Developing our pupils' independence and motivation as learners and their sense of responsibility as future citizens is at the heart of all our teaching and learning.

Our goal as a Morpeth Partnership of schools is to provide an education that encourages and promotes a strong sense of identity and pride of place based on local heritage, culture and the landscape of Morpeth and Northumberland.
