Maths: our long term overview

At Stannington First School we follow the White Rose Maths Hub Schemes of Learning. These schemes are fully in line with the 2014 curriculum and are regularly updated to include any new resources. The learning schemes provide many opportunities for children to become fluent with a maths skill and then develop their reasoning and problem solving skills.
The individual year group overviews show the coverage of topics across each year group. The resources/scheme provide continuity and clear progression between year groups. Teachers are able to use the long term overviews and ‘small steps’ to support planning mathematics sessions which challenge and support children appropriately.
The majority of our children will go onto study at Chantry Middle school where they have also adopted the White Rose Maths schemes. This ensures that our children are prepared and ready for the next phase in their maths learning journey at a new setting and ensures continuity.
What is the White Rose curriculum?
Much of the curriculum is based on White Rose maths and enriched with NCETM activities. Children are taught using a spiral curriculum, core mathematical concepts are systematically revisited throughout the year to ensure learning is embedded.
White Rose Maths focuses on children's journey to maths mastery and that's a journey that involves both consolidation of prior knowledge and development of new problem-solving and reasoning skills. Each year is progressive and builds upon prior learning.
